Biographical Statement 

Johanna Bögel completed her studies, a Master’s programme in Public Policy and Human Development at the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance, where she specialised in regional integration and multilevel-governance. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in European Studies from Maastricht University and studied International Relations and Middle Eastern Studies at La Sapienza University, Rome.

Previously, she studied a Minor programme in India Studies and complemented her academic insights with practical experiences when she worked in Indian NGOs.

In her thesis, she examined EU democratisation approaches in the Middle East and North Africa region. Additionally, she worked on a research project of UNU-MERIT in which she examined the endogeneity of violence and democratisation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As an intern at UNU-CRIS, Johanna worked on “Poverty Reduction and Regional Integration: a Comparative Analysis of SADC and UNASUR Health Policies” under the supervision of Stephen Kingah until mid-August.

Her research interests include EU foreign policy; regional integration, area studies and democratisation.
