Biographical Statement 

Beatriz S. A. Sousa was a Master of Science Candidate in Public Policy and Human Development, with specialisation in Regional Integration & Multi-level Governance at Maastricht Graduate School of Governance in collaboration with UNU-CRIS. Her thesis addresses the influence of civil society in South America decision-making processes. Beatriz holds a Master of Arts degree in Culture, Communication and Globalisation with a specialisation in International Relations and the Global Order, with a thesis on Environmental Security. She has also obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations in 2010.

She was an Intern for 3 months in 2011 at the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Settlements Programme (HABITAT) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and she was the Communications Associate and Policy Research for 10 months in 2012/2013 at the Dutch foundation Empower European Universities in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

As an Intern at UNU-CRIS she conducted research for the GR:EEN project, as well as research on regional leadership and on Transnational Policy Networks. Her research interests include, among others, comparative regional studies, participatory governance, democracy, development and global civil society. Beatriz Sousa worked under the supervision of Marieke Zwartjes and Francis Baert for a couple of months.
