Biographical Statement 

Gaia Romeo is a PhD Fellow in the Migration and Social Policy Cluster of UNU-CRIS and in  Centre for Migration, Diversity, and Justice of  the Brussels School of Governance of VUB. She is also affiliated to the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM).

Gaia’s PhD project focuses on the implementation of the EU safe country policies. In particular, her research looks at the meanings that implementing actors attach to EU safe country policies, and at how the evolving power relations among implementers affect the implementation outcome. Her research interests include EU migration and asylum policy – especially asylum procedures, return policy and border governance-  policy implementation and interpretive methodologies.

Prior to her PhD position, Gaia studied Modern and Contemporary History in Rome, Brussels and Aix-en-Provence. She also worked on a range of topics including migration, asylum, human rights and civil liberties in the NGO A Buon Diritto in Rome, at the UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, in the Secretariat of the European Parliament and in the NGO EuroMed Rights in Brussels.
