The EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) emerged at the end of the Cold War. It derived from shifts in the international system, the acceleration of European Integration, the appearance of new forms of conflict in and around Europe, the need to foster a viable defence industrial base, and certain post-modern normative approaches to international relations.
