Biographical Statement

Apra Jain is a PhD Fellow at Ghent University’s Social Work and Social Pedagogy Department and is affiliated with the UNU-CRIS Migration and Social Policy cluster. Under the supervision of Ine Lietaert, she conducts research on how global welfare imaginaries generated by the UN interact with, shape, and are transformed by local social work practices in India.

Apra holds a Bachelor's and Master's in International Relations from Ritsumeikan University, Japan. She graduated with her second Master's in Conflict and Development Studies at Ghent University. She has previously worked as an intern at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in India, at Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) in Germany, and as a Research Assistant, Writing Tutor, and Teaching Assistant at Ritsumeikan University in Japan. In this way, she gained practical experience and discovered her passion for research and working in intercultural and interdisciplinary environments.

Before becoming an affiliated PhD Fellow, Apra also completed a communications internship with UNU-CRIS, working closely with Andrew Dunn and Philippe De Lombaerde for language editing of two book volumes and other academic outputs, and optimizing the institute’s visibility and impact by identifying and leveraging effective platforms for sharing the research initiatives.
