Biographical Statement 

Caroline Buts is professor and vice-dean at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel where she teaches European Economic Integration and Competition Policy. She obtained her PhD in 2012 on the Economics of State aid which, next to defence and peace economics, is still one of her main areas of research. She is founding member and current chair of the Brussels Centre for Competition Policy and supervises multiple PhD students and projects, in both fundamental and applied research. Since 2014, Caroline is managing editor of the European State Aid Law Quarterly. She is also editorial board member of Defence and Peace Economics. In addition, she is academic director at the European State Aid Law Institute and advises public and private partners about State aid.

During her (virtual) professorial fellowship at UNU-CRIS, Caroline will primarily work on State aid in the context of energy security in close collaboration with Oksana Zolotarova. This research is connected to the Economic and Political Interactions cluster, and the Nature, Climate and Health cluster.
