Biographical Statement 

Professor Dr. Jacques Pelkmans was a Visiting Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS.  He drafted a paper on comparing common markets, in particular the EU (and the EEA-3), the ‘single market’ idea in the ASEAN Economic Community, the Central American Common Market and Caricom. 

Jacques Pelkmans holds a PhD in economics at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. Besides being an Associate Senior Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, he is also a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and a visiting professor at the Economics department of Goethe University in Frankfurt.

He is an expert in European economic integration, ASEAN economic integration, EU-Asia trade and economic relations (esp.  with ASEAN  and China)  and international trade and investment. He has been advisor to the European Commission, the OECD, the World Bank, UNIDO, ASEAN and governments in Europe and East Asia. His current research interests include the EU single market, EU market regulation, economic regionalism, EU trade policy, the economics and market access aspects of technical standards and technical barriers to trade.

Professor Pelkmans has been a regular contributor to economic and policy-oriented journals, is the author of several books (including a worldwide textbook on economic integration, also translated in Chinese and Japanese) and (co-)editor of a handful of other books in this field. Alone or with colleagues, he is the author of many reports to the European Parliament on (aspects of) the EU single market (both of goods and of services) as well as on EU trade policy. Jacques Pelkmans was the co-chair of the High Level Group incorporating both parties preparing a detailed report for the Indonesia/EU negotiations on a FTA.
