Regional Organisations and Electoral Observation
This is an in-person event.
Monday, 13 January 2025 from 11.00 - 12.30.
Since the early nineties, international election observation has grown worldwide and it is now common for the majority of national elections to be held in the presence of international observers. The recent example of Venezuela demonstrates the importance of neutral and independent international observers for the credibility and acceptation of election results. In this context, regional organizations are at the forefront of supporting democracy and electoral processes, including through their election observation missions. This seminar aims to present the structure and methodology of the main election observations conducted by a variety of regional organizations (OAS, EU, African Union, OSCE and Commonwealth) over the last 20 years. Particular emphasis will be placed on the preferred country destination for these missions, the type of elections observed and the profile of the observers.
Speaker: Régis Dandoy is a Belgian political scientist and currently professor in political science at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ, Ecuador). He is also visiting research fellow and guest lecturer at the University of Brussels (ULB, Belgium), and associate research fellow at UNU-CRIS and adjunct researcher at the Waseda University (Japan).
