Biographical Statement 

Richard Burchill is a Visiting Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS. Richard is associated with the Bussola Institute, a think tank based in Brussels that focuses on EU -GCC relations.  Prior to this, he was the Director of Research at TRENDS Research & Advisory, a think tank based in Abu Dhabi, UAE.  He was also the Director of the McCoubrey Centre for International Law and an Associate of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, both at the University of Hull, UK.  He did his PhD at the School of Law, University of Nottingham on the topic of ‘Democracy and Human Rights: Regional Perspectives on Universal Ideals.’ 

Richard will be contributing to the Regions and Cities Governance Lab (Re-LAB) work stream as he pursues a project on “The Contribution of Regional to Global Efforts for Countering Terrorism: Building Capacity of Hindering Security?”  The project is examining whether or not regional organisations are supporting the UN’s efforts in building and improving global capacity for countering terrorism.  It will also be looking at how regional approaches to counter-terrorism are impacting regional integration activities amongst member states.
