Biographical Statement 

Richard Burchill is an Associate Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS working on EU relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council and the impact of regional organisations on global efforts for countering terrorism.  Richard is associated with the Bussola Institute, a think tank based in Brussels that focuses on EU -GCC relations. Prior to this, he was the Director of Research at TRENDS Research & Advisory, a think tank based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He was also the Director of the McCoubrey Centre for International Law and an Associate of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, both at the University of Hull, UK.  He did his PhD at the School of Law, University of Nottingham on the topic of ‘Democracy and Human Rights: Regional Perspectives on Universal Ideals.’ 

Richard has advised, researched, and taught on a wide range of issues in global governance and human security.  He is the author/editor of nine books and the author of over sixty other contributions to academic journals, book chapters, and think tank publications around the world. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
