Ubi Bene, Ibi Patria:

Learning from Research & Practice on Mobility & Sustainability

11.00 – 12.00 BST / 12.00 – 13.00 CEST

Monday 17 July 2023

Online Session

Human mobility encompasses a range of migrants, from globally skilled workers to internally displaced refugees.

This event aims to explore how migration intersects with important issues like shelter and habitats, economics and labour, climate change and public health, and sustainable development.

To do so, we have invited experts who possess the practical experience and valuable insights gained from their hands-on work and research on topics such as internally displaced persons (IDPs), transnational talents and labour, and the intricate connections between climate, migration, and health.

Following the presentations, a discussion will take place focussing on a trans-regional and interdisciplinary approach to these matters, both within and beyond academia, as we aim to deepen our understanding of human mobility, the challenges it presents, and the potential for positive change towards sustainability.

Abstract
“Addressing Climate Change, Migration, and Health Nexus Towards Building Resilience for Sustainable Well-being”

As climate change accelerates and global migration patterns evolve, safeguarding health outcomes becomes an imperative task for communities and states worldwide. Understanding the intricate relationship between climate change, migration dynamics, and health is essential for resilience-building strategies. Climate change consequences, such as extreme weather events and rising temperatures, pose significant health risks, including mental health challenges and heightened vulnerability among migrant populations. Concurrently, climate-driven migration exposes migrants and host communities to unique health challenges, from limited healthcare access to social disruptions and psychosocial stress factors.

Adopting a comprehensive approach that integrates climate change adaptation and mitigation with robust health systems, including early warning systems, strengthened healthcare infrastructure, and enhanced response mechanisms, is crucial for effective health management. Prioritizing the unique needs of migrants and fostering inclusive healthcare services can mitigate disparities and ensure equitable access to care. Collaborative efforts at local, national, and global levels involving policymakers, healthcare professionals, and communities are pivotal for community and climate resilience.

By proactively addressing the interconnections between climate change, migration, and health, societies can pursue sustainable development and safeguard the well-being of present and future generations. In the context of these arguments, the event will explain how platforms like CliMigHealth Network and UNU Climate Resilience Initiative are addressing these challenges.
