Biographical Statement 

Maria Lucinda Fonseca is graduated in Geography and holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Lisbon (1989). She is currently Full Professor of Human Geography and Migration Studies and Dean of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT). She is also the coordinator of the Research Unit MIGRARE – Migration, Spaces and Societies at CEG.

Prof. Fonseca has worked extensively in the areas of migration studies and social and urban geography. Currently, she is coordinating the Portuguese team in the MobileWelfare Project – European Welfare states in times of mobility, sponsored by the NORFACE research Programme on Welfare State Futures; she is on the Board of Directors of the IMISCOE network (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe) and in the International Steering Committee of the International Metropolis Project. She was the Portuguese scientist in charge of the THEMIS project, sponsored by the NORFACE Research Programme on Migration (2010-2013) and coordinated GEITONIES, an international project funded under the 7th Framework Programme (2009-2011).

Prof. Fonseca is the director of the PhD program on Migration Studies and has wide experience in research training. She is a member of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (INTEGRIM – 2013-2016, funded under EU FP7) on international migration and integration, being also the coordinator of the research dimension on Urban Integration, Residential Patterns and Mobility.
