Note
The Seaweed Breakthrough is a bold new global initiative under the United Nations Breakthrough Agenda, uniting leading scientists, governments, and stakeholders for the urgent conservation and restoration of seaweed ecosystems. Seaweeds play a vital role in securing healthy oceans, combating climate change, and supporting economic resilience in coastal communities worldwide. This effort sets ambitious but achievable 2030 targets: halt the loss of seaweed habitats, protect, restore, and scale up sustainable finance—all underpinned by evidence and global collaboration.
Experts to join the workshop for designing these science-based targets and to help translate leading ocean research into practical policy action, ensuring seaweed habitats receive the same conservation recognition as coral reefs and mangroves. By working together, the Seaweed Breakthrough aims to set the global agenda for protecting and restoring one of the planet’s most valuable natural resources, supporting food security, biodiversity, livelihoods, and climate resilience for generations to come.
