Biographical Statement 

Michael Giesen holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Chemnitz University of Technology and a Master’s Degree in International Relations in a joint degree programme at Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Universität Potsdam.

During his studies, he was also a visiting research fellow at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a student at University of Oslo studying theories of international relations, international institutions and regional dynamics of conflict and cooperation processes. Moreover, Michael is interested in the design and politics of international and regional organisations in the realm of comparative regionalism. In his Master’s thesis, he analysed the design and politics of regional parliamentary institutions from an organisational perspective based on a newly created dataset of 65 organisations and cases studies.

Before joining UNU-CRIS, Michael worked as a student assistant in the Publications Department of the Research College “The Transformative Power of Europe” (KFG) at Freie Universität Berlin. Additionally, he is a founding member of the Editorial Board of IReflect – Student Journal of International Relations.

In the course of his four-month internship, he worked under the supervision of Ana B. Amaya in the EL-CSID project.
