Deadline

31 October, 2020.

In the last decade, a series of political, economic and social phenomena have occurred that have resulted in changes in the dynamics of the establishment or development of regional structures in the international system. As governments with nationalist objectives and demands, both on the left and right sides of the political spectrum, have come to power, the participation of States in different regional blocs or international organizations has been limited, and established the need to rethink their membership in these structures. This, in turn, reflects the fact that large sectors of civil society and social and political movements have doubts about the role that regional institutions can or should play. This might seem paradoxical at a time when it is becoming increasingly clear that many of today’s governance and policy challenges are precisely regional (or global) in scale, or at the very least cross-border: from migration flows, environmental and climate governance, to cyberspace regulation.

Therefore, the central theme in this edition of the journal will be dedicated to the analysis of the disintegrations that are presented as mechanisms, structures or processes within the framework of Latin American, European, Asian, African or comparative regionalism, or as a result of the dynamics of the international system. It includes:

  • Formal disintegrations (e.g. Chile's and Venezuela's exits from CAN, the case of UNASUR, Brexit, the cases of Georgia and Ukraine in the context of the CIS, the cases of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in the context of EurAsEC/EAEU, etc.).
  • The cases of internal paralysis and suspensions in regional organizations (e.g. the cases of Paraguay and Venezuela in Mercosur).
  • Analyses of political currents (nationalism, Euroscepticism, protectionism, ecological activism, opposition to immigration...) that question aspects of regional integration.

The proposed research must carry out its analysis on the central theme through methodologies from area studies, international relations, international political economy, comparative regionalism, international law, international business, international trade, among others.

Articles will also be received for the sections Relevant, a section containing preferably unpublished articles on current international events at the time of the call for papers, and Other themes, a section dedicated to the publication of studies and theoretical analyses, research projects developed at the University or other national and international academic centres on the specialized subject matter of the journal.

The articles for the central theme must refer to one of the points indicated above and, upon acceptance, will be reviewed anonymously by external arbitrators.

The invitation is addressed to academics, researchers and PhD students from Universities and Research Centres globally.

Those interested in presenting a paper for publication are invited to submit the final document according to the guidelines for submission and evaluation of articles, the parameters for presentation and editing rules established for authors, through the OJS platform: https://revistas.uasb.edu.ec/index.php/comentario/about/submissions
