Water-related disasters—including floods, droughts, cyclones, and landslides—are intensifying under the pressures of climate change, posing grave risks to lives, ecosystems, and economies. With over 74% of natural disasters in the past two decades linked to water (UNDRR, 2023), the urgency to explore innovative and sustainable solutions has never been greater.

To address this challenge, UNU CRIS is collaborating with national and sub-national agencies in India to jointly organize a webinar titled “Understanding New Landscapes of Water–Disasters: Probing Options.” The event will highlight cutting-edge approaches such as AI-driven flood forecasting, real-time IoT-based monitoring, remote sensing for early warning, and nature-based solutions like wetland restoration, sponge cities, and biochar applications.

The session will bring together scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and youth leaders to explore new paradigms for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, and UNU CRIS will co-organize this, and Dr Nidhi Nagabhtala will participate to provide a keynote.

Objectives

  • Examine recent trends and scientific evidence on water-related disasters under climate change.
  • Explore technological innovations and nature-based solutions for disaster preparedness and resilience.
  • Engage youth, researchers, and practitioners in co-developing strategies for sustainable water–disaster management.

Join us to be part of the dialogue and help shape solutions for a resilient future.
