Biographical Statement 

Eric Maertens is an Associate Research Fellow at the Comparative Regional Integration Studies Programme of the United Nations University (UNU-CRIS) since 2007. He is also a member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the Institut de Socio-Econolmie des Entreprises et des Organisations (I.S.E.O.R., Lyon, France)

E. Maertens was Executive Assistant to the I.L.O. Executive Director, responsible for Technical Cooperation, the Regions and the International Training Centre of the ILO, located in Turin, Italy. He joined the I.L.O. in 1972, as a junior professional and, further on, as expert in manpower analysis and training, with a first 8 years assignment in Latin America to the Inter-American Vocational Training Research and Documentation Centre (CINTERFOR, Montevideo) . His career at the ILO International Training Centre included the responsibility of a joint research programme with the Control Data corporation on computer-based education(CBE) , the management of the Centre’s computer training applications section, the management of the Latin-American desk and of the Program Development Service, with an overall responsibility for the constituents’ needs analysis, the follow-up to the Centre’s programme and budget cycle and its external relations, mainly the resources mobilization strategy and donors negotiations. Since 1996, in his position as an executive Assistant, his functions included also the follow-up to the strategic partnership with the European Union, the liaison with ILO headquarters Departments and liaison with the Governing Body of the ILO and of the Turin Centre.

Eric Maertens holds an M.A.in Social Sciences and post graduate studies in labour Sociology, Economics, and Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) His recent and current areas of interest cover the social policy dimension of regional integration and trade openness and the corporate social responsibility (CSR).
