Biographical Statement

Dr. Ivaylo Gatev graduated from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, with a degree in European Politics. He received a Master’s degree in Contemporary European Studies from the University of Bath and a PhD from Aston University. During his time at UNU-CRIS, he was also a Lecturer in European Politics/Regional Integration in the School of International Studies at the University of Nottingham campus in Ningbo, China.

Ivaylo’s research interests are in European integration and the accompanying process of disintegration of previous or alternative systems of order in East Europe. He studies the external dimension of EU policies and their impact on the prevailing social, economic and political relations in the post-Soviet space. He also studies the modalities and impact of Chinese economic activity in the region. Ivaylo’s research is driven by wider questions of regional governance and comparative regionalism. In addition to the European Union, he studies emerging integration projects in post-Soviet Eurasia, notably the Eurasian Economic Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

At UNU-CRIS, Ivaylo Gatev worked under the supervision of Director Luk Van Langenhove on the role of regional organisations in the development and operation of the Eurasian overland transport corridor.
