Biographical Statement 

Jan Aart Scholte is Professor in Peace and Development at the School of Global Studies since 2013. His previous appointments were at the University of Sussex, the Institute of Social Studies, and the University of Warwick. Jan Aart Scholte has also had visiting positions at Cornell University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Linköping University, the London School of Economics, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and Moscow State University. I obtained my DPhil from the University of Sussex in 1990 and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Gothenburg in 2010.

Areas of interest covers globalization, global governance, civil society in global politics, global democracy, legitimacy in global governance, global Internet governance, and methodologies of global studies.

In 2016-2021 he co-convenes the Legitimacy in Global Governance (LegGov) programme, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfonds. From 2018 he is a Co-Director of the Centre for Global Cooperation Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In 2018-2020 he coordinates a project on ‘Legitimacy outside the State: Governing the Global Internet’, funded by the Swedish Research Council.
