Biographical Statement 

Jan Vandemoortele was an Associate Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS. He holds a PhD in Development Economics, served in various capacities with the United Nations for over 30 years. He worked both in the field (Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi and Pakistan) and at headquarters (New York) with UNICEF, UNDP, the ILO and the World Bank. His last position was UN Resident and Humanitarian Co-ordinator to Pakistan. He was the co-architect of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a topic on which he published widely.

As independent researcher and lecturer, he has been a keen follower of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focussing on inequality. He regularly spoke at universities across the world, at international conferences, at NGOs and donor workshops, at high schools and for cultural associations. He was member of the advisory board of various development institutes and global initiatives, and a referee for various peer-reviewed journals.
