Biographical Statement 

Mona Fias did her Bachelor’s Degree in Geography at Ghent University and is currently following the Master’s programme Sustainable Development at KULeuven. As a specialisation, she follows the ‘Space and Society’ track. During her internship at UNU-CRIS, she worked on her Master thesis focussing on ‘Accessibility of nature and green spaces for refugees and asylum seekers in Belgian reception centres’. 

Apart from her studies, she has worked as a student for the GaWC datacollection project (Globalisation and World Cities) for Ghent University and as a GIS operator for the Flemish Government. Apart from that, she works as a volunteer for Pulse Transition Network in Brussels and for VZW Mariam tutoring underprivileged children, mainly children with a migration background.

During her three-month internship at UNU-CRIS, she helped the UNU-CRIS staff with mapping issues, mainly social spatial mapping for the IDPs project (Internally Displaced Persons) under the supervision of Ine Lietaert.
