Director Philippe De Lombaerde Lectures on "Regions in International Politics for the 21st Century" at KU Leuven

22 November 2024

UNU-CRIS Director Philippe De Lombaerde delivered a guest lecture at the KU Leuven on “Regions in International Politics for the 21st Century” for the international politics master students. The lecture covered the normative case for, the proliferation of, and the impact of regionalism in today’s world, and zoomed in on some of the current debates: the role of regions in a reformed multilateral system, and the globalization of regionalism studies.

Key take-aways:

  • Regions and regionalism are a (socially constructed) reality
  • There is a strong normative case to make for (more) regional cooperation
  • Regions have a role to play in multilateral architectures
  • Regions are diverse, overlapping but not omnipresent
  • Regions are delivering but not always effective
  • There is a challenging research agenda
