The Functioning of International Norm Diffusion: A Case Study of EU Geographical Indications
Tuesday, 12 November 2024
11.00 - 12.30
Abstract: The world has become an economic and legal battlefield for the control of global standards. In this struggle, the European Union has managed to export its rules in many policy areas, including on geographical indications. How was the European Union able to make geographical indications the standard of protection of traditional agricultural products throughout the world? In this seminar, we will dive into the functioning of the instruments used by the European Union to export norms beyond its borders. Though the focus will be on geographical indications, this seminar may prove interesting to anyone curious to know more about the ways in which the EU's policy of norm diffusion works in practice, beyond the "Brussels Effect".
Keywords: European Union, International trade, external relations, Brussels Effect, policy diffusion, agriculture, intellectual property, geographical indications
Speaker: Alexandre Lejeune was a research intern at UNU-CRIS. He wrote his master's thesis at the College of Europe for which he was awarded the UNU-CRIS prize for best thesis on the EU and global governance.
