The Gulf Environment & Beyond: Global Change, Regional Impacts and Solutions

05 December 2023

The event is hosted by The Gulf Environment & Beyond: Global Change, Regional Impacts and Solutions ( Abu Dhabi)

Background

Climate adaptation is a necessary reality for countries and cities around the globe.

To identify pathways for adaptation, it is essential for climate change to be understood at the regional and sub-regional scales, as it is only with this data that municipalities and other regional actors may prepare. This workshop gathers leading scientists from multiple disciplines to identify knowledge gaps, spur collaboration and exchange data. It also addresses the need for capacity building in the climate and environmental sectors at the regional and city scales, with a special emphasis on the Gulf.

In her intervention during the event, Dr Nidhi Nagabhatla reiterated that circularity presents a dynamic solution for cities tackling sustainability challenges. Embracing the 5Rs—reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, and redesign—promotes resource efficiency and minimizes waste. Taking note of emerging trends and patterns regarding how sectors and actors have adopted and adapted this concept into their operations reflects its potential to support cities for boosting resource use efficiency, ensuring nothing goes to waste- to create 'sustainable loops'. By doing so, cities can cut down on waste, save resources, and build a more resilient future. This approach benefits the environment, helps with balanced economic growth, and creates new opportunities for innovation and collaboration among local communities. She emphasised that circularity could evolve to be a win-win strategy transforming cities into vibrant, sustainable hubs.
