Sime, Zane
The title of Zane Šime’s doctoral work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is “The EU Science Diplomacy Towards the Southern Neighbourhood: Reappraising the EU Structural Diplomacy.” In 2024, Zane served as a Country Informant for the Asia-Europe Science & Technology Diplomacy Initiative of the Asia-Europe Foundation and a member of one of the EU Science Diplomacy Working Groups convened by the European Commission.
During her (virtual) visiting research fellowship at UNU-CRIS, Zane is especially focusing on various aspects of science diplomacy and its intersections with other scholarly currents under the UNTRAD cluster. Her ongoing research concerns various facets of EU science diplomacy. Among her other research interests are EU macro-regional governance and educational diplomacy in the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) context.
From March 2020 until November 2020, Zane completed a research internship at UNU-CRIS. Under the supervision of Glenn Rayp and Samuel Standaert, she worked on the expansion of the Regional Integration Knowledge System (RIKS) data base. She used the RIKS repository to prepare UNU-CRIS Working Paper #02, “Mediterranean Lasagne of Migration Governance: What is the Way Forward for the Regions in Governing the Euromestic Sphere? An EU-Centric Perspective”, also published in book format by Generis Publishing. Additionally, she published articles and policy briefs on the macro-regional governance of the Baltic Sea Region and EU-India relations, focusing on various dimensions of connectivity. She worked on research and higher education cooperation among European and North African-based institutions.
She has acquired academic administration experience at the RISEBA University of Applied Sciences. Zane is a former Academic Assistant at the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies of the College of Europe (Bruges campus). Zane has obtained research experience at the Academy of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). She is a graduate of KU Leuven and the University of Latvia. Her previous work experience includes project implementation at the Secretariat of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the Latvian civil service.
