Public Lecture on Cultures, Crises and Contestation: Considerations on the Future of Europe by Philomena Murray

18 September 2025

Professor Philomena Murray is Associate Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS.

Europe is facing a number of challenges, both internal and external. There is a perception of crisis across Europe, with altered dynamics of international diplomacy, trade relations and the roles of global actors. President Trump has shocked European states. Established alliances and security arrangements are now in question, relating to: NATO, Russia and Ukraine; and Palestine and Israel.  Previous assumptions about power balances and partnerships have come under threat. There is a values deficit in humanitarianism, as exclusionist narratives about migration and refugees become increasingly corrosive. And finally, democracy and government institutions are being undermined by the extreme right. This lecture reflects on the impact of these challenges and considers some strategies that might enhance stability, democracy and fundamental rights.
