UNU-CRIS Awarded 'Sustainability Hero' by the City of Bruges

UNU-CRIS has been recognised as one of five Sustainability Heroes for 2023 by the city of Bruges, in a ceremony hosted by Mayor Dirk De fauw at the Bruges City Hall on Tuesday 12 September.

The awards cover five pillars – Planet, Partnerships, People, Prosperity and Peace – highlighting local sustainability initiatives.

UNU-CRIS was awarded the ‘Peace’ pillar for its contribution to peace through research, training and impactful policy advice. The Institute works to improve governance in various policy areas and, in doing so, set the necessary peaceful conditions for a sustainable future.

In giving the award, Mayor De fauw highlighted the evaluation of Bruges’ SDG progress, carried out by UNU-CRIS researchers, using the SDG Monitor. This report provided helpful feedback on the city’s SDG initiatives and helped the city to achieve a positive final evaluation in the SDG Pioneer City Programme.

As a Sustainability Hero, UNU-CRIS will serve as an ambassador for the SDGs during Sustainable Municipality Week, held annually from September 18-25 and organised by the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities (VVSG).

UNU-CRIS werd erkend als één van de vijf "Duurzaamheidshelden" voor 2023 door de stad Brugge tijdens een ceremonie die georganiseerd werd door burgemeester Dirk De fauw in het Brugse stadhuis op dinsdag, 12 september.

De prijzen omvatten vijf pijlers - Planet, Partnerships, People, Prosperity en Peace - en belichten lokale duurzaamheidsinitiatieven.

UNU-CRIS werd bekroond met de pijler 'Vrede' voor haar bijdrage aan vrede door middel van onderzoek, opleiding en impactvol beleidsadvies. Het instituut werkt aan de verbetering van het bestuur op verschillende beleidsterreinen en reikt op deze manier de noodzakelijke vreedzame voorwaarden aan voor een duurzame toekomst.

Bij het uitreiken van de prijs benadrukte burgemeester De Fauw de evaluatie van de voortgang van Brugge op het vlak van de SDGs, uitgevoerd door onderzoekers van UNU-CRIS met behulp van de SDG Monitor. Dit rapport geeft nuttige feedback over de SDG-initiatieven van de stad en helpt de stad om een positieve eindevaluatie te behalen in het SDG Pioneer City Programma.

Als Duurzame Held zal UNU-CRIS optreden als ambassadeur voor de SDGs tijdens de Week van de Duurzame Gemeente, die jaarlijks van 18 tot 25 september wordt gehouden en georganiseerd wordt door de Vereniging van Vlaamse Steden en Gemeenten (VVSG).
